Teaching and Learning in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a country in Southern Africa, just North of South Africa. In years past it had one of the highest literacy rates in all of Africa and was considered the 'bread basket' of Southern Africa. Unfortunately, with the rise to power of Robert Mugabe things changed drastically for the worse. The people retain a spirit of hope for their country and its future, in spite of him.
In the summer of 2011, I spent five weeks teaching in five Zimbabwean government schools. Two are in the tourist area of Victoria Falls and three are in rural villages near Hwange National Park. The goal was to model lessons for the teachers during the day and to train the teachers after school. I have created DVDs of both teaching and traveling in Zim. I've shown them to Birchie families, colleagues, friends, and family. I also made an abbreviated version to show my students. I thought I would post some of those pictures here for your viewing, as well. It was a life changing experience for me and is something I am happy to share with anyone who is interested! I look forward to hearing your thoughts and to answering any questions you may have about my journey!
